Russell Henley produced a dramatic late surge to claim victory at the Charles Schwab Challenge on Sunday, edging Eric Cole in a playoff at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. The American sealed the win with a short birdie putt on the first extra hole after both players finished tied at 12-under-par 268.
Henley closed his final round with a strong finish, birdieing the last three holes to card a three-under 67 and force a playoff. In contrast, Cole, who had led after the third round, posted a final-round 70 and narrowly missed out on his first PGA Tour title.
The playoff was decided quickly on the par-four 18th hole. Cole had an opportunity to extend the contest but missed a 13-foot birdie attempt. Henley then calmly converted from inside five feet to secure his sixth PGA Tour victory and his first since the 2025 Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Cole had started strongly with birdies on his opening two holes but was unable to maintain momentum as the round progressed. Despite the disappointment, he finished alone in second after a solid week of competition.
Behind the leading duo, defending champion Ben Griffin shared third place at 11-under alongside Mac Meissner and Alex Smalley. Griffin delivered one of the best rounds of the day with a five-under 65, highlighted by a blistering front nine.
Henley’s path to victory was far from smooth. He began with an eagle on the opening hole before adding an early birdie, but a difficult stretch in the middle of his round saw him drop several shots and fall back in the field. However, his strong finish ultimately kept him in contention and set up the playoff.
Meissner briefly had a chance to join the playoff but found trouble on the final hole, ending his hopes after finding a bunker and settling for par. Elsewhere, JJ Spaun, Gary Woodland, Michael Brennan, and Nico Echavarría finished tied for sixth at 10-under-par.
England’s Jordan Smith, who had shared the halfway lead, finished tied for 13th after a closing round of 68, unable to maintain his earlier momentum as Henley completed a memorable comeback victory.
