Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens: NRFF President Charges Stallions to Go for Glory in Mauritius

Posted : 21 June 2025

As the Nigerian national men’s rugby team, the Stallions, begins their campaign at the Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens tournament in Mauritius today, the President of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), Dr. Ademola Are, has issued a rallying call for the team to aim for nothing less than glory.

Dr. Are praised the Stallions for their impressive rise over the past three years, citing their regular participation in international competitions and improved performances as key indicators of the team’s development.

“This tournament offers us another chance to measure our progress and evaluate how far we’ve come in the last three years,” he said. “Despite the challenges we’ve faced in creating ideal preparation conditions, I’m impressed by the unwavering commitment of our players. Their passion and patriotism are second to none.”

Highlighting the broader vision for rugby growth in Nigeria, Are reiterated the Federation’s ambition to eventually match leading African rugby nations such as South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda.

“Our long-term strategy includes grassroots programs like the Rugby Rising schools initiative, already active in several states,” he noted. “We’re also in talks with potential sponsors for the National 7s Circuit and the 15s League, both of which we aim to launch before the end of the year. The development of women’s rugby is also a priority, and we’re seeking partnerships to unlock its full potential.”

While acknowledging ongoing infrastructural and financial constraints, Are expressed pride in the dedication of Nigerian players.

“When it comes to heart and commitment, our players rival the best. That’s why I’m optimistic. I urge them to leave everything on the field—play for the badge, the flag, and the millions of Nigerians who believe in them.”

Are also acknowledged the rising popularity of rugby in Nigeria, commending fans for their support.  “The love for rugby is growing. Our fans understand the sacrifices these young men have made, and they will continue to support them regardless of the outcome.”

Nigeria’s campaign kicks off today (Saturday, June 21) with a challenging opener against South Africa’s Blitzboks at 10:06 a.m., followed by matches against Burkina Faso (12:28 p.m.) and Zambia (3:12 p.m.).
