Rory McIlroy, the Masters champion, announced Wednesday that he will compete in the Australian Open for the next two years, marking his return to the prestigious tournament after a long absence. The world No. 2 golfer made the announcement ahead of the US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, confirming his participation in the event this December at the renowned Royal Melbourne course. He will also return for the 2026 edition when the tournament moves to Kingston Heath.
The Northern Irishman, who completed a career Grand Slam with his dramatic playoff victory at Augusta last month, expressed his excitement about playing in Melbourne.
McIlroy, who previously won the Australian Open in 2013, highlighted the significance of the event for global golf and shared his enthusiasm for experiencing Melbourne's world-class sporting atmosphere both on and off the course. His return to the tournament will end an 11-year hiatus.
Australian tournament officials are hopeful that McIlroy’s participation will attract other top players, such as PGA Tour winner Min Woo Lee, major champions Cameron Smith, and Adam Scott.
Golf Australia CEO James Sutherland emphasized how McIlroy's appearance on the Melbourne Sandbelt will excite golf fans and elevate the tournament's profile. McIlroy’s victory at Augusta last month ended a major win drought dating back to 2014, completing his collection of all four major titles.
