Rory McIlroy, fresh off his Masters victory where he completed the career Grand Slam, had a tough start to the US PGA Championship, shooting a three-over-par 74 on day one, which left him eight shots behind the leader. The 36-year-old managed just two birdies and struggled to find rhythm in a challenging round.
He played alongside world number one Scottie Scheffler and defending champion Xander Schauffele, who also faced difficulties but stayed within reach of the leaders, finishing at two under and one over par respectively.
American Ryan Gerard took the early lead with a five-under-par 67 at Quail Hollow, showcasing an impressive stretch between holes 10 and 15 where he birdied four times and eagled once. Despite late bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes, Gerard remained three shots ahead of his nearest competitors.
England’s Luke Donald and US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley also delivered strong performances, with Donald carding a bogey-free 67 and Bradley finishing at three under after a lone bogey on the final hole.
Several other European players stayed close to the leaders, including Germany’s Stephan Jaeger at four under and Sweden’s Alex Noren, England’s Matt Fitzpatrick, and Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, all finishing at three under par.
This European presence near the top of the leaderboard adds to the excitement as the championship progresses. Ryder Cup captains Donald and Bradley both impressed early on, setting a competitive tone ahead of the September event.
As the tournament moves forward, attention will also focus on other notable contenders such as last year’s US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, Masters runner-up Justin Rose, and American Jordan Spieth, who is still chasing a PGA Championship win to complete his collection of major titles. These players will have their chance to challenge the leaderboard in the later rounds, keeping fans eager for the unfolding drama at Quail Hollow.
