Rory McIlroy took an early step toward capturing a seventh Order of Merit crown with a brilliant six-under-par 66 in the opening round of the season-ending DP World Tour Championship on Thursday. The Northern Irishman sits two shots behind American Michael Kim, who recorded a flawless bogey-free 64, and one behind England’s Tommy Fleetwood, who also went bogey-free with a 65.
More importantly for McIlroy, his two remaining mathematical challengers, England’s Marco Penge and Tyrrell Hatton, had difficult starts. Playing alongside McIlroy, Penge shot a two-over 74 to be tied 46th in the 52-man field, while Hatton carded a 70, tying him for 22nd.
McIlroy, playing the championship for the 15th time, showed his comfort on the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates, where he has won three times, including last year. “Overall, it was a really solid start on a course I know well, and historically, I’ve performed very well here,” he added.
American Michael Kim, the 2018 John Deere Classic winner, has also enjoyed a strong season, highlighted by his FedEx Open de France victory in September. “I’m playing well and enjoying the travel. Yardage books are excellent these days, and my caddie does a great job of preparing us for the course,” Kim said. He made five birdies in the first six holes of his back nine, including a brilliant recovery birdie on the 15th after smashing his tee shot into the trees.
Tommy Fleetwood, FedEx Cup champion on the PGA Tour, credited his experience and consistency for his bogey-free 65. The DP World Tour Championship carries the richest purse on the tour at $10 million, with the top 10 players also sharing a $6 million end-of-season bonus pool.
