Rory McIlroy says Masters triumph has fuelled his motivation for more major success

Posted : 07 May 2026

Rory McIlroy says he feels more driven than ever as he prepares to return to competition following another memorable triumph at the Masters Tournament.

The Northern Irish golfer heads into this week’s Truist Championship fresh from successfully defending his title at Augusta National, where he edged out Scottie Scheffler to secure back-to-back Green Jackets. The victory added another major milestone to McIlroy’s career after he completed the career Grand Slam last year with his dramatic play-off win against Justin Rose.

Reflecting on his latest Masters success, McIlroy admitted the feeling was different from previous achievements. He explained that while completing the Grand Slam had once seemed like a potentially life-changing accomplishment, he has since realised there is still much more he wants to achieve in the game.

The world number two described this year’s victory as confirmation that the hard work he has put in over recent seasons is paying off. After a difficult stretch following last year’s Masters, where he struggled at both the PGA Championship and US Open before recovering later in the year, McIlroy believes he is now in a stronger position mentally and competitively.

His 2025 campaign eventually ended positively with victories at the Irish Open and a major contribution to Europe’s Ryder Cup success over the United States in New York.

Now 37, McIlroy is already focused on the challenges ahead, including upcoming major tournaments at Aronimink, Shinnecock Hills and Royal Birkdale. He insists his recent Augusta success has increased, rather than reduced, his hunger for further titles.

McIlroy returns to one of his most successful venues this week at Quail Hollow, where he has already claimed four PGA Tour victories. The North Carolina course was also the site of his first PGA Tour title back in 2010, making it a place filled with positive memories for the six-time major champion.

He also praised the atmosphere surrounding the tournament and the support from local fans, saying the event consistently stands out because of the strong connection between the community and the players.
