Rory McIlroy shared his thoughts on Donald Trump's stance regarding the ongoing dispute between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, revealing that Trump expressed his dislike for LIV's 54-hole format during a golf game prior to his presidential inauguration. Speaking before the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, McIlroy noted that Trump seemed to align more with the PGA Tour, suggesting he supported the Tour in its battle with LIV.
The PGA Tour has been in discussions with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), which funds LIV, in hopes of resolving the rift in the golf world. Trump recently met with PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and player director Adam Scott to assist in negotiations with PIF.
McIlroy highlighted Trump's unique ability to influence the situation, given his direct access to key figures like PIF's governor, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, and his ability to relay messages to influential people in the Middle East.
McIlroy reflected on a recent conversation with Trump, where he confirmed the President's opinion on LIV's format and expressed his alignment with the PGA Tour. Trump acknowledged hosting LIV events but clarified that it didn't mean he supported the format, further indicating his position on the side of the PGA Tour in the dispute.
