Rory McIlroy optimistic about upcoming meeting with Saudi representatives to resolve golf split

Posted : 18 March 2024

Rory McIlroy expressed hope that an upcoming meeting between players on the PGA Tour board and representatives from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) could lead to progress in resolving the ongoing split in golf. Negotiations are ongoing between the PGA Tour and PIF, which backs LIV Golf, regarding a potential merger. PGA player-director Patrick Cantlay confirmed that a meeting with PIF representatives is scheduled for Monday, with McIlroy emphasizing the importance of moving closer to a solution.

McIlroy highlighted the delayed nature of the meeting, stating that it should have occurred months earlier, but he is nonetheless optimistic about its potential outcome. The Northern Irishman emphasized the importance of advancing conversations and reaching a resolution regarding the split in golf, expressing hope that the meeting will facilitate progress in this regard.

Discussions about a potential merger between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, with involvement from PIF, began last June but failed to yield an agreement by the previous deadline at the end of 2023. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan recently met with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, while PGA Tour player-directors, including Cantlay, are also set to engage with Al-Rumayyan in further discussions.

McIlroy underscored the need for PIF to demonstrate a commitment to doing the right thing and expressed optimism about finalizing the investment. He acknowledged the significant disconnect between PIF and LIV, emphasizing the importance of bridging this gap and ultimately reaching a beneficial agreement. Despite the complexities involved, McIlroy emphasized the importance of securing investment and working toward a compromise that addresses the interests of all parties involved in professional golf.
