Rory McIlroy Makes Masters History with Back-to-Back Titles at Augusta

Posted : 13 April 2026

Rory McIlroy further cemented his legacy as one of golf’s greats by successfully defending his Masters crown, becoming only the fourth player in history to win consecutive titles at Augusta National.

The 36-year-old from Northern Ireland produced a composed final round of 71 to finish at 12-under-par, edging world number one Scottie Scheffler by a single stroke in a dramatic finish to the 2026 Masters.

McIlroy’s long-held belief that finally winning the Green Jacket in 2025 would unlock further major success proved correct, as he returned to Augusta playing with renewed freedom and confidence. He had ended an 11-year wait for his career Grand Slam last year, and now adds a sixth major title to his résumé, moving level with Sir Nick Faldo.

Reflecting on his achievement, McIlroy said he could hardly believe he had now won two Green Jackets in succession, crediting his perseverance at Augusta over the years for his breakthrough success.

The Northern Irishman once again held off a strong challenge from England’s Justin Rose, who briefly led during the final round and was aiming to become the oldest first-time Masters champion. Rose, however, faltered during the back nine, dropping crucial shots at key moments.

Rose had also pushed McIlroy to a playoff in the previous year’s edition, but this time the roles were reversed as the Englishman slipped under pressure at Amen Corner, allowing McIlroy to pull clear.

McIlroy’s victory was built on resilience, particularly after early struggles off the tee earlier in the tournament. He adjusted his approach, prioritising accuracy over power, which proved decisive in a tightly contested final round.

Scheffler, a two-time Masters champion, finished as runner-up after a bogey-free weekend performance that further underlined his consistency at Augusta. Despite his strong finish, early setbacks in the tournament ultimately cost him the title.

Elsewhere, England’s Tyrrell Hatton, alongside Americans Russell Henley and Cameron Young, shared third place after impressive closing rounds. Hatton in particular delivered one of his best Masters performances, showing significant improvement at a course he once struggled to master.

McIlroy’s triumph places him among an elite group of players, including Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Nick Faldo, to have successfully defended the Masters title. His latest victory reinforces his transformation over the past year and confirms his place among the modern greats of the sport.
