Rory McIlroy Expects “Different” Irish Open as Donald Trump Eyes Visit

Rory McIlroy believes this year’s Irish Open will have a noticeably different atmosphere if US President Donald Trump attends the tournament at his golf resort in Doonbeg, County Clare.

Trump, a well-known golf enthusiast, is expected to visit the event during a two-day trip to Ireland. His schedule is also set to include meetings with Irish President Catherine Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin.

McIlroy has previously played golf with Trump and said the president’s passion for the sport is well established. The Northern Irishman acknowledged that Trump’s presence would create logistical challenges but insisted his focus would remain on competing.

“It’s going to be different,” McIlroy said. “He’s a big fan of golf, he’s a wonderful supporter of golf. He’s got a beautiful property here in Doonbeg.”

Trump could potentially present the Irish Open trophy to the winner on Sunday. However, increased security arrangements could affect the number of spectators allowed around the course.

McIlroy said the tournament could feel particularly different while Trump is present because of the restrictions and additional logistical demands surrounding a presidential visit.

The 37-year-old arrives at the event as one of only six male players to have completed the career Grand Slam. He is also a two-time Irish Open champion, having won his first title at the K Club in 2016 before claiming another victory there in 2025.

His most recent Irish Open triumph came after he produced an eagle on the final hole to force a playoff with Joakim Lagergren, eventually defeating the Swede on the third extra hole.

McIlroy admitted that he has not always enjoyed his performances at his home tournament, revealing that the expectations and responsibilities surrounding the event previously affected his game.

He now feels more comfortable approaching the competition and believes greater relaxation has helped him deal with the pressure associated with playing in the Irish Open.
