Rory McIlroy Doubts Tiger Woods' Return in 2024 Amid Injury Struggles

Posted : 13 March 2025

Rory McIlroy has expressed doubts about Tiger Woods returning to competitive golf this year following the 15-time major champion’s latest injury. Woods, 49, recently underwent surgery for a ruptured Achilles tendon, adding to his struggles with injuries since a severe car accident in 2021. He has not played on the PGA Tour since The Open in July.

McIlroy, who played against Woods in January at their co-founded Tomorrow’s Golf League, acknowledged Woods’ persistent injury troubles and expressed hope for his recovery, but does not expect him to return until at least 2026.

McIlroy, who has largely avoided major injuries since an ankle ligament rupture in 2015, has reflected on his career trajectory ahead of the Players Championship. The 35-year-old emphasized that he wants to retire on his own terms, ensuring he steps away before his performance declines significantly.

He recognizes the longevity golfers enjoy compared to other athletes but insists he will walk away once he feels he can no longer compete at the highest level. McIlroy is adamant about avoiding the Champions Tour, stating that if he finds himself needing to compete at 50, something will have gone wrong.

Despite his forward-looking perspective, McIlroy remains focused on the present, having secured his 27th PGA Tour victory at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am last month. However, he has been disappointed with his recent finishes, tying for 17th at the Genesis Invitational and 15th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

He has identified his Sunday performances as a weak point but has found encouragement in his improved putting. As he prepares for the Players Championship, McIlroy will tee off alongside world number one Scottie Scheffler and number three Xander Schauffele, aiming to build momentum for the coming months.
