Rory McIlroy was involved in a heated moment during the final round of the PGA Championship on Sunday after a spectator disrupted his swing at a critical stage of his round. The world number two reacted angrily when a heckler shouted during his backswing on the par-five 16th hole, causing his shot to drift into a greenside bunker.
Visibly frustrated, McIlroy shouted an expletive and told the individual to be quiet, with reports indicating that he also requested security remove the spectator from the course at Aronimink Golf Club. The incident drew attention due to its timing, coming during a key stretch of his round.
Despite the distraction, McIlroy recovered well on the hole, escaping the bunker to set up a par save from close range. However, the interruption cost him a realistic birdie opportunity at a pivotal moment in the championship.
McIlroy eventually closed his round with a one-under-par 69, finishing the tournament at four-under 276, five shots behind eventual winner Aaron Rai. His round included steady play but was undermined by missed chances on key scoring holes.
The Northern Irish star, who claimed his sixth major title at the Masters earlier this year, pointed to missed opportunities on the par-fives as decisive. He also acknowledged that a bogey on the reachable par-four 13th proved costly in the final standings.
McIlroy said that converting chances on the ninth and 16th holes could have significantly changed the outcome of his tournament. He felt his overall performance was strong but ultimately not enough to challenge for the title.
He is now expected to take a short break before returning to competition at the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament in preparation for next month’s U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.
