Rory McIlroy Calls for Fewer Tournaments on PGA Tour

Posted : 29 January 2025

Rory McIlroy has expressed concerns that the abundance of golf options available could lead to "fatigue" among fans. The 35-year-old Northern Irish golfer suggested that there are "definitely too many" events on the current PGA Tour schedule, acknowledging that the sheer volume of competitions could dilute the sport’s appeal. McIlroy, a prominent critic of the LIV Golf series, also co-founded the Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL), which is entering its first season.

With the rise of YouTube golf content and other emerging platforms, McIlroy believes the traditional PGA Tour offering has been "diminished" by the increased competition for viewers. He drew a comparison with American football's NFL, which has a 17-game regular season, and proposed that the PGA Tour could benefit from a similar approach by scaling back its number of events. McIlroy emphasized the potential value in creating a sense of scarcity to heighten the appeal of tournaments.

"I can see when the golf consumer might get a little fatigued of everything that's sort of available to them," McIlroy noted, adding that reducing the number of tournaments could help maintain interest in the sport. He concluded by stating that a schedule of 47 or 50 tournaments per year is "definitely too many" and suggested that fewer events might ultimately benefit the game.
