Rory McIlroy believes an extended stay in the United Kingdom has provided the ideal preparation for two of the biggest events of the golfing calendar as he gears up for the Genesis Scottish Open and next week's British Open.
Although he is based primarily in Florida, the six-time major champion has spent much of the past seven weeks at Wentworth, using the time to rest, prepare and adapt to links-style conditions before returning to competition. McIlroy said the familiar surroundings have given him a sense of comfort as he begins his campaign at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick.
The Northern Irish star explained that staying in the same house each year has made Scotland feel like a second home. He also spoke about enjoying time with friends and neighbours, including fellow professional Tommy Fleetwood and his family, saying those moments have helped him relax before a demanding stretch of golf.
McIlroy begins the Scottish Open alongside home favourite Robert MacIntyre and defending champion Chris Gotterup in one of the marquee groups. The tournament has attracted a world-class field, with world number one Scottie Scheffler also using the event as his final preparation before defending the Claret Jug at Royal Birkdale next week.
Scheffler made it clear that he is in Scotland to compete rather than simply fine-tune his game. The American hopes to contend for the title at the Renaissance Club and gain valuable experience in the closing stages of the tournament as he continues his preparations for the season's final major championship.
