Rory McIlroy has admitted he was struggling to find answers after a disappointing showing at the FedEx St Jude Championship, where he finished 66th and 25 shots behind winner Scottie Scheffler. The Northern Irishman carded an eight-over-par total and failed to post an under-par round during the tournament.
The result came in McIlroy’s first competitive appearance since the Open Championship in July. After winning his second Masters title earlier in the season, he looked short of sharpness at TPC Southwind and now faces a quick turnaround before the BMW Championship.
McIlroy acknowledged that his lack of recent competitive action affected his performance. He said he felt increasingly uncertain about his swing as the week progressed and recognised that considerable work would be required before he could feel confident about challenging again.
His biggest problems came from tee to green, where his performance ranked near the bottom of the field. There were brief signs of improvement during a seven-hole stretch on the back nine, when he made four birdies, but consecutive bogeys at the finish prevented him from gaining any real momentum.
Despite the poor result, McIlroy remains in contention in the FedEx Cup standings and has advanced to the BMW Championship. He will now head to Bellerive Country Club in St Louis, where he will need to rediscover his form if he is to pursue a record-extending fourth FedEx Cup title.
