Posted : 23 March 2024

In just her second LPGA event, rookie Malia Nam is making waves, holding a one-shot lead after the second round of the Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. The University of Southern California alumna carded a solid 2-under-par 69 at Palos Verdes Golf Club, bringing her total to 8-under 134. Nam, 24, finds herself in a tight competition, with defending champion Ruoning Yin of China and Sweden's Madelene Sagstrom tied for second at 7 under.

Despite facing some challenges on the course, including a double-bogey 6 on the 15th hole, Nam showcased her skill with five birdies and eight pars over the next 13 holes. Reflecting on her performance, Nam acknowledged feeling nervous, considering it a sign of her proximity to achieving her goals. With her extensive experience playing Palos Verdes, having teed off there more than 100 times, Nam enjoys a home-course advantage, a factor contributing to her confidence on the challenging terrain.

Meanwhile, defending champion Ruoning Yin displayed her prowess with an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole, accompanied by six birdies and a couple of bogeys. Yin remained focused despite setbacks, emphasizing the importance of patience on the course. Madelene Sagstrom, tied for second, encountered some struggles but managed to salvage her round with crucial saves, showcasing the resilience required in competitive golf.

As the tournament progresses, Nam finds herself in a promising position, buoyed by her familiarity with the course and her strong performance thus far. With contenders like Yin and Sagstrom hot on her heels, the competition promises to intensify as the players vie for victory in the Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship.
