Team Nigeria added another medal to its tally at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh as Obiageri Pamela Amaechi claimed silver in the women’s discus event. Amaechi secured second place with a best throw of 56.99m on her fifth attempt, following earlier throws of 51.51m, 55.57m, a foul on her third attempt, and 54.27m on her fourth.
She finished just behind Cameroon’s Nora Atim Monie, who captured gold with a throw of 57.04m. Although Amaechi did not approach her personal best of 64.80m, set in August 2025, she expressed satisfaction with her performance given the timing of the competition.
“It has been a hectic season, and I had planned to rest and reboot ahead of next year and the Commonwealth Games,” Amaechi said. “When Nigeria calls, you have to answer. My body has already shut down for the season, so getting here took a lot. I would have loved to push for gold or near my PB, but I’m proud to represent my country.”
Fellow Nigerian and African record holder Chioma Chukwujindu ‘CiCi’ Onyekwere finished fourth after struggling to match her top form. “I’m happy to be here, but I wish I could have done better,” Chioma said. “My body just couldn’t respond. I was already preparing for my break before the invite came, and I arrived only a day before the event due to a tight schedule. Now I just want to rest and prepare for next season with full focus on the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.”
