Rickie Fowler Eyes FedExCup Surge with Return to John Deere Classic

Posted : 02 July 2025

Rickie Fowler is set to tee off at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois, on Thursday, hoping to reset after a disappointing outing and gain momentum in the race toward the FedExCup Playoffs. The 36-year-old golfer, currently ranked 111th in the Official World Golf Ranking, is returning to this event for the first time in 14 years, a venue he last played as the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 2010.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Fowler expressed his enthusiasm about returning to TPC Deere Run. “It’s great to be back,” he said on Tuesday. “I played in Zach Johnson’s pro-am yesterday and caught up with some familiar faces. This has always been a tournament I enjoyed, and I’m excited it fit into the schedule this time around.”

Fowler opted to forgo next week’s Scottish Open in favor of playing more events stateside, noting the scheduling difficulties this time of year as players prepare for The Open Championship. Despite recent challenges, including missing the cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Fowler remains optimistic about his current trajectory.

“I wish the results had been stronger,” he admitted. “But I feel like we’re moving in the right direction. Aside from last week, I’ve seen a lot of positive signs in my game.”

A six-time PGA Tour winner, Fowler has notched one top-10 finish this season and five top-25 results. As he works to solidify his spot in the FedExCup standings, every tournament presents a vital opportunity to gather points and build confidence.

Meanwhile, speculation has surfaced regarding Fowler's potential role as an assistant captain for Keegan Bradley’s Ryder Cup team. Fowler, however, dismissed any official developments on that front.

“I haven’t heard anything about that,” he said. “I’ve always enjoyed being part of team events, and I’d be happy to help if it comes to that. Keegan has great people around him, and I’m sure he’s focused on putting together the best team possible. If I’m asked, I’d be honored—but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

With renewed focus and a strategic schedule, Fowler enters the John Deere Classic aiming to turn the page on a frustrating stretch and build a strong finish to the season.
