Remco Evenepoel aims for Tour de France grand finale in Riviera time trial

Posted : 12 March 2024

A day after completing the Paris-Nice stage race, Remco Evenepoel extended his stay in the region to familiarize himself with the route of the final stage of the upcoming Tour de France, which will conclude in Nice this year.

While the 24-year-old Belgian cyclist is considered a potential Tour de France winner, his primary goal is to leave a lasting impression on the race, particularly given the unique finish on the Riviera. The Tour de France, deviating from its traditional Parisian conclusion due to the Olympic Games, will wrap up with a spectacular time trial along the scenic Corniche between Monaco and Nice.

Evenepoel, the time trial world champion, aims to make a significant impact on the Tour, utilizing the challenging and picturesque final stage to showcase his capabilities.

The Soudal Quick-Step team, led by sports director Klaas Lodewyck, carefully examined the course, emphasizing the demanding nature of the time trial, especially considering its placement on the last day of the race. Lodewyck expressed enthusiasm for the spectacular backdrop of the Monaco to Nice time trial and acknowledged that many teams are preparing intensively for the event.

The decision to conclude the Tour de France on the French Riviera, instead of Paris, is unprecedented in the race's 121-year history. The route alteration was implemented to offer a unique and visually stunning replacement for the iconic Parisian finish.

The Monaco to Nice time trial is anticipated to provide a thrilling conclusion to the Tour, with the challenging course and breathtaking scenery adding to the excitement. The stage holds historical significance, evoking memories of the 1989 Tour, where Greg LeMond secured an unexpected victory in the final-day time trial.
