Exclusive: Rachel Iliya Talks Rugby, Fitness, and Representing Nigeria

Posted : 13 September 2025

Iliya is a dynamic Nigerian athlete and fitness trainer, celebrated for her versatility across multiple sports. Based in Lagos, she plays for Eko Trinity in Nigeria’s domestic rugby league and is a key member of the country’s women’s national rugby team, the Green Falcons. She has also earned distinction as the top try-scorer in the Nigeria Women’s Rugby League.

In August 2025, Rachel, alongside teammate Blessing Aladeyelu, was selected to train with the Bradford Bulls women’s rugby team in the UK in preparation for the Women’s Rugby League World Series in Canada, scheduled for October 2025.

This international training is designed to refine their skills and ensure peak performance for the tournament. Africa Sport Network recently spoke with Rachel to learn more about her journey, challenges, and ambitions.

From Football to Rugby: A Journey of Determination

Rachel’s love for sports began at the tender age of five, starting with football. While her father supported her interest, her mother initially opposed it, preferring traditional gender roles. Despite injuries and resistance, Rachel’s determination never wavered.

She became a junior school football captain and later tried for Nigeria’s U-17 football trials, which led her to switch to flag football.

Her rugby journey began in 2020–2021 when Mr. Abiodun Olawale-Cole, president of the Nigeria Rugby League Association, invited her to try the sport. Initially hesitant due to its physical nature, Rachel eventually embraced beach rugby and later joined Echo Trinity Women in 2024.

Shaping Her Rugby Career

In her first official game, she scored two tries and quickly earned a place in the national team, representing Nigeria in international competitions, including a memorable tournament in Kenya.

Rachel recalls her debut international experience as both exciting and challenging. “I was the only inexperienced player at the camp, but very fit,” she said.

After three weeks of intensive training, she was selected to start in the game, scoring two tries and earning the nickname “secret weapon” from her mentor, Mr. Abiodun Olawale-Cole.

Being part of the Green Falcons has been both challenging and transformative for Rachel. It has pushed her to believe in herself, overcome obstacles, and embrace continuous improvement.

“Women’s sports are often underrated, but rugby has shown me that with consistent training, I can always get better,” she explained.

Challenges in Nigerian Rugby

Rachel highlighted the financial and infrastructural challenges facing rugby in Nigeria.

The sport lacks standard pitches, government support, and medical provisions, and players often rely on personal funds from management.

Despite these hurdles, Nigerian women’s rugby has achieved significant success in the Middle East Africa region, demonstrating immense potential with proper support.

Preparing for the World Stage

Looking ahead, Rachel and her teammates are training in Bradford, UK, to prepare for the World Series in Canada.

This training is an opportunity to access professional coaching, improve technical skills, and showcase their talent internationally.

Rachel emphasized that this experience could open doors for both herself and other Nigerian players.

Raleigha Fitness: Building a Brand

Beyond rugby, Rachel is a dedicated fitness entrepreneur. She started Rayliya Fitness Fitness after years of personal training and certification. The name combines “Ray” from Rachel and “Liya” from her father, lIiyah.

She built the business from scratch, training multiple clients daily while managing her own fitness and overcoming financial challenges.

Today, Rayliya Fitness is a recognized brand, reflecting Rachel’s dedication and resilience.

Advice to Aspiring Athletes

Rachel encourages young Nigerian girls and aspiring athletes to persevere despite challenges.

“Rejection, criticism, and setbacks are part of the journey. Don’t let them stop you. If your dream doesn’t scare you, it’s not big enough,” she said.

She emphasizes self-belief, hard work, and persistence as keys to success in sports and life.

Rachel Iliya’s story is one of determination, resilience, and unwavering passion. From humble beginnings to national recognition, she continues to inspire a new generation of athletes in Nigeria, proving that with hard work and dedication, dreams can be realized.
