Quinn Simmons Claims First French Victory With Bold Breakaway at Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Posted : 11 June 2026

American cyclist Quinn Simmons delivered an impressive performance to win stage four of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes on Wednesday, holding off the chasing peloton after a well-executed breakaway reached the finish in Montrond-les-Bains.

The Lidl-Trek rider, known for his distinctive long red hair and the stars-and-stripes jersey he wears as United States national champion, secured his first career victory on French roads and his third triumph at World Tour level.

Simmons has built a reputation as one of the peloton’s most aggressive riders, frequently joining breakaways in major races. His attacking style gained widespread attention during last year’s Tour de France, and his persistence paid off with a memorable stage win in central France.

Reflecting on the victory, the 25-year-old said racing in the national champion’s jersey carries special significance because riders must reclaim the title each year. He added that the result was particularly rewarding after the hard work he has put in during training back home in Colorado.

The decisive move came from a breakaway group that formed early in the 167-kilometre stage. The escapees increased their pace dramatically in the closing kilometres, catching the peloton off guard and maintaining just enough of an advantage to stay clear until the finish line.

Simmons then capped off the effort by winning the sprint among the leading group, a result he admitted was unusual for him given that sprint finishes are not typically his specialty.

New Zealand’s Finn Fisher-Black finished second, while France’s Matteo Vercher completed the podium in third. Belgian star Wout van Aert led the sprint from the chasing pack to claim fourth place, only a few seconds behind the breakaway riders.

In the overall standings, French rider Alex Baudin retained the race lead. Ineos Grenadiers teammates Kevin Vauquelin and Oscar Onley remain close behind, both trailing by 12 seconds. Highly rated contender Paul Seixas sits 10th overall, one minute off the lead.

The Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, previously known as the Critérium du Dauphiné, serves as one of the most important preparation races for the upcoming Tour de France. Riders will face a lengthy but relatively flat fifth stage before the race concludes with demanding mountain tests in the French Alps.

The final weekend is expected to be decisive, culminating in a challenging ascent of Plateau de Solaison, where contenders will tackle an 11.3-kilometre climb averaging nine percent gradient in the battle for overall victory.
