Primoz Roglic Moves Into Second as Enric Mas Defends Vuelta Lead

Primoz Roglic climbed to second overall after gaining 33 seconds on Vuelta leader Enric Mas in the stage 18 individual time trial.

Primoz Roglic strengthened his bid for a fifth Vuelta a España title by moving into second place in the general classification after a strong performance in Thursday’s stage 18 time trial. The Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe rider finished fourth on the 32.1km course from El Puerto de Santa María to Jerez de la Frontera in 35 minutes and 41 seconds. (

Roglic’s result allowed him to overtake Felix Gall, who finished 25th, while also cutting Enric Mas’ overall advantage. Mas placed 12th on the day but limited his losses to 33 seconds against Roglic, leaving the Spaniard with a 1:37 lead with three stages remaining.

Stefan Küng claimed the stage victory after producing the fastest time in the individual test. The Swiss rider completed the course in 35:22, finishing three seconds ahead of Britain's Callum Thornley, while Joao Almeida took third at nine seconds back.

The battle for the red jersey is now entering its decisive phase. Roglic has regained second overall, while Gall has slipped to third, setting up a major contest during the final mountain stages. Mas remains in control but will have to defend his advantage on terrain where the overall contenders can still make significant gains.

Oscar Onley remains fifth overall after finishing 17th in the time trial. The British rider also increased his advantage over Jacob Omrzel in the young rider classification, keeping himself firmly in contention as the race heads into its final weekend.

The riders now face a demanding 210.8km stage from Vélez-Málaga to Peñas Blancas before Saturday’s queen stage, which covers 187km and finishes at Collado del Alguacil. Those mountain stages will provide Roglic and the other challengers with their final major opportunities to put pressure on Mas.

The Vuelta will conclude in Granada on Sunday, where Mas will attempt to protect his lead and secure the biggest victory of his career. A successful defence would give the 31-year-old his first Grand Tour title and make him the first Spanish winner of the Vuelta since Alberto Contador in 2014.
