President’s Cup Returns with ‘Triumvirate Showdown’ Format

Posted : 25 July 2025

The President’s Cup, a prestigious celebration of Scrabble excellence, is set to make a grand return with a new twist — the ‘Triumvirate Showdown’, a team-based format that promises excitement and innovation. Scheduled for August 14 to 17 at the Trademark Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya, the tournament will see mind gamers compete in teams of three, bringing together top players from across the continent and beyond.

The competition will begin with six groups of six teams, playing 30 games in a round-robin format. After 15 games, teams will be reassigned into new groups based on their rankings, adding a strategic layer to the tournament’s progression.

According to the Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA), players will be grouped into three rating categories, and each team can include a maximum of two top-rated players to ensure balance and fairness.

The winner of Group A will receive a cash prize of $6,000 and flight tickets to the 2025 World English Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC) in Ghana. Additional rewards will be distributed across other groups.

Dozens of teams from across Africa and beyond have already registered for the four-day tournament, which has been gaining international momentum. The event is designed not only to showcase elite Scrabble skills but also to foster diversity and community among players.

Meanwhile, the registration portal remains open until Friday, July 25, according to the Local Organising Committee (LOC). PANASA encourages players to form teams and register early to be part of what promises to be one of the most vibrant and competitive Scrabble gatherings on the continent.

The ‘Triumvirate Showdown’ will be held alongside the 2nd African Youth Scrabble Championship at Brighton International School in Nairobi, further cementing the city’s position as a hub for continental mind sports development.
