South African golfer Aldrich Potgieter surged into the lead at the Mexico Open with a sensational 10-under-par 61 in the second round, establishing a four-shot advantage. The 20-year-old, competing in just his 10th PGA Tour event, delivered a flawless performance with 10 birdies, reaching 16-under 126 after 36 holes at VidantaWorld resort. Potgieter credited his early momentum, which included five consecutive birdies on the front nine, and a crucial chip-in par save on the 10th hole that kept his round on track.
Germany’s Stephan Jaeger, the 2023 Houston Open champion, and American Brian Campbell, who is in pursuit of his first PGA Tour title, sit in second place at 130. England’s Aaron Rai, last year’s Wyndham Championship winner, follows closely at 131.
Potgieter, a former Amateur Championship winner, could become the fifth-youngest PGA Tour winner since 1983. His 61 also makes him the fourth-youngest player to shoot 61 or lower on the PGA Tour, placing him alongside notable names like Tom Kim, Nick Dunlap, and Patrick Cantlay.
Potgieter’s round featured precise iron play and a hot putter, as he capitalized on multiple birdie opportunities. He opened with a near-perfect approach for birdie on the first hole and sank crucial putts, including a 16-footer at the par-3 fifth and a 20-footer at the 13th.
Although he missed opportunities for an even lower score at the 14th and 18th, his ability to recover from mistakes, such as a water hazard on the 10th, kept him in control. Looking ahead, Potgieter remains focused on maintaining his putting form and strategic shot-making as he aims for a historic victory.
