Pogacar Survives Scare to Outsprint Mas and Win Vuelta Stage Six

Tadej Pogacar claimed his third stage victory of the 2026 Vuelta a España after beating Enric Mas in a thrilling sprint at the end of stage six. The Slovenian survived a brief off-road excursion on the final descent before recovering to stay with Mas and finish strongly.

Pogacar had appeared set for another dominant solo win after attacking on the final climb and opening a significant gap over his rivals. However, Mas produced an impressive response, catching the defending world champion and passing him near the summit to take maximum points in the mountains classification.

Mas led the descent and even urged Pogacar to be cautious, but the race leader continued to push. Pogacar briefly ran off the road after misjudging a corner, although his bike-handling skills helped him avoid a serious crash. He quickly recovered and rejoined Mas, with the pair working together to extend their advantage over the chasing group.

The Spaniard then stayed alongside Pogacar until the finish, but the Slovenian proved too strong in the final sprint to secure another stage victory. The result extended Pogacar's overall lead to 3 minutes and 34 seconds, while Mas moved into second place in the general classification.

The victory strengthens Pogacar's bid to complete a career Grand Tour set by winning the Vuelta, having already collected five Tour de France titles and one Giro d'Italia. Mas, meanwhile, emerged as his strongest challenger so far after an impressive performance on the demanding stage.

Welsh rider Josh Tarling also left the race during the stage. The 22-year-old, whose younger brother Finlay died two weeks ago following a collision with a vehicle during the Tour of Portugal, abandoned after initially choosing to start the Vuelta. Tarling had begun the race impressively, finishing third in the opening individual time trial behind Pogacar and Ethan Hayter.
