Pogačar Dominates Tourmalet to Reclaim Tour de France Yellow Jersey

Posted : 10 July 2026

Tadej Pogačar delivered a commanding performance on the first major mountain stage of the 2026 Tour de France, powering to victory on stage six and reclaiming the coveted yellow jersey. The defending champion launched a decisive attack on the legendary Col du Tourmalet and left his closest rivals behind, taking a significant step toward a fifth Tour title that would equal the all-time record.

The 27-year-old Slovenian attacked with around five kilometres remaining on the Tourmalet climb and quickly opened a substantial gap over his nearest challenger, Jonas Vingegaard. By the summit, Pogačar had already established a commanding advantage before extending it further on the descent and final climb to Gavarnie-Gèdre. He crossed the finish line well clear of Vingegaard, while UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammate Isaac del Toro completed the podium ahead of Remco Evenepoel and rising French talent Paul Seixas.

The emphatic victory reshaped the general classification, with Pogačar moving into the overall lead by 2 minutes and 42 seconds over Vingegaard. Del Toro climbed to third overall, underlining UAE Team Emirates-XRG's dominance on the first high-mountain test of this year's race.

The stage also brought disappointment for former race leader Torstein Traeen. The Norwegian crashed during the stage and was later diagnosed with a concussion and multiple rib fractures, forcing him to withdraw from the remainder of the Tour. His exit ended a remarkable run in the yellow jersey after overcoming cancer earlier in his career.

Speaking after the stage, Pogačar described the victory as one of the finest of his career, admitting he had been eagerly anticipating the Tourmalet challenge. He praised the teamwork of his UAE squad and reflected on the emotional significance of winning on a climb where he had previously endured difficult memories. With the Pyrenees now behind him, Pogačar has firmly established himself as the rider to beat as he pursues another Tour de France crown.
