PGA Tour to Introduce Two-Week Matchplay Tour Championship From 2028

Posted : 26 August 2026

The PGA Tour will dramatically change the way its season concludes from 2028, with the Tour Championship becoming a two-week matchplay competition featuring 32 of the leading players. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp announced the revamped format ahead of this year’s Tour Championship at East Lake.

The new finale will begin with the 32 qualifiers divided into eight groups of four. Players will compete against each member of their group in head-to-head matches, with the top two from each section advancing to the second week. If players are tied at the end of the group stage, a playoff will determine who progresses.

The remaining 16 golfers will then move to another venue for four days of knockout matchplay. The competition will ultimately produce an undefeated player, who will be crowned Tour Championship winner. The PGA Tour says the new structure is designed to give the season a more compelling finale while testing elite golfers in a format different from conventional strokeplay.

The matchplay championship will follow a separate 72-hole strokeplay finale involving 90 players. That event will determine the season-long champion and reduce the field to the 32 golfers who qualify for the two-week Tour Championship. This means the regular-season points winner and Tour Championship winner will be recognised separately. (

Tiger Woods, who chaired the PGA Tour’s Future Competition Committee, welcomed the changes and said the conclusion of the season should reflect the significance of the journey to that point. Rory McIlroy also backed the concept, describing the two-week, two-venue format as a major departure that he believes could work well.

The change will mark the first time matchplay has been used for the Tour Championship and represents another major step in the PGA Tour’s wider restructuring of its calendar. Details of the 2028 venues and dates are expected to be announced on February 22, 2027.
