Discussions regarding the potential reunification of professional golf have progressed, with the PGA Tour, LIV Golf chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan, and U.S. President Donald Trump holding a meeting at the White House. This follows ongoing negotiations since the PGA Tour and DP World Tour announced a proposed merger with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) in June 2023.
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and player director Adam Scott, who previously met with Trump, were joined in Washington D.C. by 15-time major champion Tiger Woods for further talks on the future of the sport.
A joint statement from Monahan, Scott, and Woods described the discussions as "constructive," emphasizing a shared commitment to uniting the game and ensuring the world’s best golfers compete together more frequently.
Woods, speaking at the Genesis Invitational last week, expressed optimism that the divide in men's professional golf could be resolved swiftly with Trump's involvement. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy has voiced his belief that Trump supports the PGA Tour in its ongoing dispute with LIV Golf, and former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley remains hopeful that an agreement could be finalized before the Masters in April.
The launch of LIV Golf in 2022 disrupted the traditional golfing landscape, attracting high-profile players such as Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Smith, and Brooks Koepka with lucrative contracts.
The surprise merger announcement in mid-2023 temporarily halted legal disputes between the competing tours, though negotiations have since faced delays. The initial deadline to finalize the deal was set for December 31, 2023, but an extension has allowed further discussions to continue.
LIV Golf is financially supported by PIF, a Saudi sovereign wealth fund that also holds majority ownership of Premier League club Newcastle United.
The involvement of Saudi Arabia’s investment arm has been a key point of contention in the discussions, with critics raising concerns over the geopolitical implications. As negotiations move forward, the golf world remains eager to see whether a definitive resolution will be reached to unify the sport at the highest level.
