PGA Tour Eliminates Starting Strokes from Tour Championship Format

Posted : 28 May 2025

The PGA Tour has officially scrapped the use of starting strokes for the season-ending Tour Championship, transitioning to a traditional 72-hole stroke-play format where all 30 players will begin at even par.

Previously, players received a head start based on FedEx Cup rankings, with Scottie Scheffler beginning at 10-under last year and ultimately winning despite shooting six shots worse than Collin Morikawa over the tournament. This change, approved by the player advisory council and the policy board, will take effect during this year’s event at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta from August 21 to 24.

Tour commissioner Jay Monahan emphasized that the revision is aimed at enhancing competitiveness and clarity for fans. He noted that the decision stemmed from a thorough evaluation led by the Player Advisory Council to align postseason golf with fan expectations—highlighting high-stakes action in an easy-to-follow format.

In addition to the scoring adjustment, course layouts will be redesigned to introduce more risk-reward opportunities that heighten suspense throughout each round.

Other modifications to the playoff structure are also under review, particularly ways to make qualification for the Tour Championship more exclusive by increasing the weight of season-long FedEx Cup points.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler voiced his support for the changes, calling the revised format more transparent and challenging, which he believes will elevate the level of competition. The championship field will continue to be drawn from top finishers in the preceding St. Jude and BMW Championships.
