Team Edo’s remarkable outing at the 3rd National Para Games in Abuja was defined not just by their second-place finish but by standout individual performances that powered their impressive medal haul.
With a total of 25 gold, 14 silver, and 25 bronze medals, Edo athletes demonstrated excellence across several events, particularly in Para Table Tennis and Para Cycling, where their dominance proved decisive.
Ivie Edogiawerie Peculiar emerged as one of the stars of the Games, claiming double gold in the Women’s Open Singles and Class 10 categories. Her performance set the tone for Edo’s success on the table.
Blessing Aiwekhoe added to the gold rush with victory in the Class 5 Women’s Singles, before combining effectively with Olowe to clinch another gold medal in the Mixed Doubles event. Contributions also came from Ada Okungbowa and Kazeem Adejunye, who secured bronze medals in their respective events.
On the track and road, Favour Ojieabu delivered a stellar display in Para Cycling, winning two gold medals and a silver, while Samuel Okojie also struck gold to further boost the team’s tally.
In Para Powerlifting, Cynthia Wanogho showcased strength and determination to claim gold in the 50kg category, adding to Edo’s growing medal count. Additional podium finishes in Para Taekwondo and Powerlifting highlighted the team’s all-round capability.
Competing in 10 sports with a contingent of 47 athletes, Team Edo showed depth and consistency throughout the Games, held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium and Jabi Lake.
Despite their impressive performance, Edo finished behind table-toppers Enugu State, who lead the standings with 36 gold medals, while other states including Bayelsa, Lagos, Rivers, Plateau, Imo, and Osun followed in the rankings.
Looking ahead, Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, Honourable Amadin Desmond Enabulele, expressed optimism about the future, reaffirming the state’s commitment to developing para-athletes and building on the momentum generated at the Games.
The success of Team Edo at the 3rd National Para Games underscores the immense talent and resilience of the state's athletes.
