Winners of the second Pan African School Games will receive a brand-new school bus among other prizes as the competition begins at James Hope College in Lagos on Friday, October 16, 2026. The three-day event will run until October 18 and is expected to attract more than 400 student-athletes from schools across Nigeria.
Mikano Changan Motors is sponsoring the school bus, which represents one of the major rewards available to participating schools. The initiative is expected to encourage competition and support the development of school sports in Nigeria.
The second edition builds on the success of the inaugural competition, which was hosted by British International School in Lagos. The first edition attracted 11 schools and more than 300 student-athletes, establishing a platform for young people to showcase their sporting abilities.
This year's Games will feature athletics, swimming, and football across the under-11, under-13, and under-15 categories. Athletics and swimming will each feature 30 events, while participating schools will compete for honours in football.
The competition was established by Seun Akinbohun, Busola Tejumola, and Aderoju Ope-Ajayi. Their vision extends beyond traditional school sports by combining athletic development with education, career opportunities, and cultural exchange.
According to the organisers, the Games provide a platform for talented young athletes to demonstrate their abilities before scouts, agents, and educational institutions. Outstanding performances could help participants access further sporting opportunities, scholarships, and academic pathways.
A major development in this year's edition is the rebranding of the competition from the Africa School Games to the Pan African School Games. The organisers said the change reflects their ambition to build a continental platform dedicated to youth development through sport.
The new identity also highlights the organisers' commitment to creating an African-owned competition where young athletes can compete, develop friendships, and access opportunities that could shape their sporting and academic futures.
Participation is expected to increase from the inaugural edition, which featured more than 300 student-athletes. Organisers also aim to maintain high standards in competition, athlete welfare, event management, and technical delivery.
The Games are designed to connect education and sport while giving young athletes an opportunity to gain experience in a competitive environment. With the school bus among the prizes on offer, the event also highlights the role corporate sponsorship can play in supporting school sports and encouraging youth participation.
