Over 150 Golfers Set for ₦35m Oris Pro-Am Championship in Aba

Posted : 07 November 2026

Aba is set to welcome some of Africa's leading golfers as preparations intensify for the 2026 Oris Pro-Am Championship scheduled for November 25 to 28 at the Aba Sports Club 1926 in Abia State.

The tournament has attracted more than 150 confirmed professional golfers, including 15 players from other African countries. Participants will compete for a ₦35 million prize purse, while amateur golfers will battle for more than 60 prizes across different categories.

Sponsored by Oris Signature Hotel, the championship is expected to strengthen Aba's position as an emerging destination for sporting events and tourism in Nigeria.

Chairman of Oris Signature Hotel, Owelle Greg Okafor, described the competition as an opportunity to support local talent, promote the city and complement the Abia State Government's development initiatives.

Okafor said the tournament reflects his commitment to community development and the growth of sports in the region.

He also noted that this year's championship carries additional significance because it coincides with the 100th anniversary of Aba Sports Club.

Local Organising Committee Chairman, Chief Greg Esotu, confirmed that registration for professional golfers had closed following strong interest. However, amateur registration remains open ahead of the tournament.

Esotu disclosed that the professional competition would follow a gross stroke-play format, with golfers competing for their share of the ₦35 million prize money. Amateur participants will also have opportunities to win prizes across more than 60 categories.

The tournament will follow a four-day schedule, beginning with the professional competition on Wednesday, November 25.

Category One amateurs will join the competition on Thursday, November 26, while Friday, November 27, will feature the professionals' final round, elite amateur golfers and ladies competing in the handicap 29–36 category.

Other amateur categories will conclude on Saturday, November 28, before the prize presentation and closing ceremony.

Golf Section Captain, Sir Bona Anyadiaso, assured participants of a smooth and professionally organised tournament. He expressed confidence that the club would provide the facilities and hospitality required to deliver a memorable championship.

The club's 68th President, Chief Nkene Enukeme, also described the competition as a fitting celebration of Aba Sports Club's century-long contribution to sporting development.

Beyond the competition, organisers expect the championship to attract visitors, promote local businesses and showcase Aba's tourism potential.

The event also aligns with Abia State Governor Alex Otti's efforts to reposition the state through economic development, infrastructure improvements and increased investment in tourism.

With international participation confirmed and professional entries closed, the Oris Pro-Am Championship is shaping up to be one of the major golfing events on Nigeria's sporting calendar for November 2026.
