The Nigerian archery scene is set to welcome a global influx of talent this week as Zen Archery hosts the inaugural Lagos International Open Tournament at Onikan (Mobolaji Johnson) Stadium. Beginning Wednesday, June 18, the four-day event will run through Saturday, June 21, and is expected to feature approximately 100 archers representing various nations.
Participants will compete in compound, recurve, and barebow categories, showcasing their skills in a format designed to highlight precision, focus, and technique in line with Olympic-style standards. This tournament builds on the success of previous domestic events organized by Zen Archery, which have drawn strong local engagement and support .
Lagos State Sports Commission Director General Lekan Fatodu expressed enthusiasm for the event’s development. Speaking at the opening ceremony, he emphasized Lagos’s goal of diversifying its sports portfolio and nurturing talent beyond traditional disciplines. “We’re committed to giving archers the platform to excel and represent both Lagos and Nigeria on a global stage,” Fatodu stated .
Located on Lagos Island, Onikan Stadium, officially known as Mobolaji Johnson Arena, is a historic venue with a capacity for 10,000 spectators. While typically used for football, it will be transformed into an archery range equipped to international standards throughout the tournament period.
The event underscores Zen Archery’s mission to increase archery’s visibility in Nigeria and provides a new opportunity for athletes to gain experience and exposure in a competitive setting. For many archers, this international open will offer ranking points and bolster efforts toward Olympic qualification and global competitiveness.
