Oran 2026: Nigeria’s Para Powerlifters Shine with 49 Medals in Algeria

Nigeria’s para powerlifting team once again affirmed its dominance on the African stage after finishing second overall at the 2026 African Open Para Powerlifting Championships in Oran, Algeria.

The Nigerian contingent produced an impressive medal return of 49 medals, comprising 32 gold, 12 silver, and five bronze medals across four days of intense competition against some of the continent’s strongest para powerlifting nations.

The championship featured more than 150 athletes from about 20 countries, including powerhouses such as Egypt, Algeria, Iran, Iraq, and Jordan, but Team Nigeria stood tall with a remarkable display of strength, determination, and technical excellence.

Reacting to the performance, Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade praised the athletes, coaches, and officials for making the country proud once again.

According to him, the team’s achievement reflects the resilience and winning mentality associated with Nigerian sports.

He noted that the athletes’ efforts continue to inspire millions of Nigerians while enhancing the country’s image globally, adding that the Federal Government remains committed to supporting sports federations and athletes through improved development initiatives.

Nigeria’s outstanding performance ensured the country finished among the top two nations at the championship, underlining the growing depth and consistency within its para sports programme.

Egypt emerged overall champions with 84 medals, including 47 gold, 28 silver, and nine bronze medals, while host nation Algeria settled for third position with 20 gold, 34 silver, and 23 bronze medals.

This exceptional outing in Algeria reinforces Nigeria's position as a powerhouse in continental para powerlifting. The massive medal haul highlights the dedication of the entire delegation and sets a strong foundation for future international competitions.
