The National Sports Commission (NSC) has taken a significant step toward structuring netball in Nigeria by appointing seasoned sports administrator Oluwatoyin Aluko as President of the newly formed Nigeria Netball Federation (NNF).
NSC Director General Bukola Olopade emphasized the need to establish a sustainable framework for the growth of netball in Nigeria. He highlighted that netball is one of the fastest-growing sports globally and that many top Nigerian athletes in the diaspora are already excelling at the highest levels.
“As part of the President’s mandate to build a sustainable sports economy, we aim to create a well-organized system where Nigerians, whether at home or abroad, can take pride in representing the country in their specialized sports,” Olopade said. “Our research shows that over thirty Nigerians are actively playing netball in top leagues across Europe and South Africa. With a well-organized federation, we can develop a formidable team to enhance our podium prospects.”
Aluko, a former national netball player, is currently the President of the Association of Former Female Athletes of Nigeria (AFFAN) and brings over 45 years of experience as an athlete, coach, and sports administrator. Olopade confirmed that the full board of the federation would be announced in the coming days.
