Ollie Pope Faces Final Chance to Cement England Test Place

Posted : 18 December 2025

Ollie Pope’s early dismissal on day two of the third Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval has raised serious questions about his place in the England side. The 27-year-old, who began the series with promise, once again struggled against Australia’s attack, leaving his team vulnerable and adding to England’s mounting batting woes.

The right-hander’s recent failures follow a promising start in Perth, where he scored 46 in the first innings of the opening Test. However, his confidence has faltered, highlighted by two poor dismissals in Brisbane and a series of uncharacteristic mistakes against Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon in Adelaide. Pope’s aggressive attempts to score have often backfired, leaving him looking jerky and unsettled at the crease.

Former England batsman Dawid Malan suggested that Pope’s desperation to succeed may be contributing to his difficulties. Malan highlighted the importance of pacing oneself at the crease and slowing down when under pressure, advice Pope might now need more than ever.

Pope’s record at number three has steadily declined since 2022, with his average dropping below 40 for the first time since taking on the role. While his career boasts standout performances, such as a match-winning 196 against India in Hyderabad, inconsistency has become a concern, especially against Australia, where he has yet to register a fifty in 15 innings.

Captain Ben Stokes has publicly supported Pope in the past, pointing to his overall contributions and potential, but the player must now prove he can convert talent into consistent performances. His next innings could determine whether he remains a key figure in England’s Test setup or faces being replaced.

With England’s Ashes campaign hanging by a thread, Pope’s ability to regain form and composure is crucial. The next match represents a pivotal moment for the batter, as he fights to maintain his spot against the world-class Australian attack.
