Nigeria's men's volleyball team delivered another commanding display on Wednesday, defeating hosts Côte d'Ivoire 3-0 to maintain their unbeaten start at the 2026 African Nations Cup (AFCON) Zone 3 Qualifiers.
The Nigerians overcame the home side in straight sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-19, recording their second consecutive victory in the tournament and boosting their qualification ambitions.
Head coach Taiwo Oladipupo praised his players for their discipline and composure, describing the victory over the host nation as a significant statement of intent.
"I'm very, very happy. Beating the host nation is never an easy task, especially in front of their home fans. But we showed that we are capable of doing it, and we proved it on the court with a convincing victory," Oladipupo said.
The coach credited the team's impressive performances to unity, belief and faith.
"First of all, we thank God for everything. Our success is not just about strength or power. We believe that when God is on your side, there's no reason to be afraid. That's the spirit we've carried into every match, and by God's grace, we'll keep winning," he said.
Nigeria will now turn its attention to Thursday's crucial encounter against the Benin Republic, with another victory expected to strengthen the team's chances of securing qualification.
Oladipupo expressed confidence that his players would sustain their winning momentum while remaining respectful of their next opponents.
"Watch out for our next match. We respect every opponent, but we're confident in our team. Our objective is clear—we'll go out there to win for our country," he said.
Nigeria has now recorded two wins from two matches, dropping only one set in the competition, underlining its status as one of the strongest contenders in the Zone 3 qualifying tournament.
The impressive start has placed Nigeria in a strong position as the qualifiers progress, with the team determined to maintain its unbeaten run and secure a place at the 2026 African Nations Cup.
