Oladipupo Confident as Nigeria Overcomes Niger Republic in Zone 3 Volleyball Qualifiers Opener

Posted : 15 July 2026

Nigeria's men's volleyball team opened their campaign at the 2026 African Nations Cup Zone 3 Qualifiers on a winning note, defeating Niger Republic 3-1 to take an early step toward qualification.

Coach Taiwo Oladipupo's side claimed the opening set 25-22 before Niger Republic responded with a 25-19 win in the second set to level the contest.

The Nigerians, however, regained their composure, edging a closely fought third set 25-23 before dominating the fourth set 25-9 to seal an impressive victory.

Head coach Taiwo Oladipupo praised his players for their determination and character, particularly after losing the second set.

"First of all, I thank Almighty God for giving us our first win of the tournament. I'm very happy with the result. The boys lost the second set, but they responded brilliantly by winning the third and fourth sets," he said.

Despite the convincing win, the coach admitted there were aspects of the team's performance that needed improvement and assured that the technical crew would address them before the next fixture.

"We will go back and work on the areas where we made mistakes. This is a game of perseverance, and we know exactly what happened. We will correct those errors and come back stronger," Oladipupo added.

Nigeria will now turn its attention to a key clash against hosts Côte d'Ivoire on Wednesday, with the coach insisting his side will maintain the same attacking approach regardless of the opposition.

"Whether they are the hosts or not, our approach remains the same. We are going all out to play whoever comes our way. Our objective is simple: to secure the three points and move on, and that's exactly what we will be aiming for."

The opening-day victory provides Nigeria with valuable momentum as they continue their bid to qualify from the Zone 3 tournament.

Nigeria will be aiming to build on its encouraging start when it faces the host nation in its next fixture. A positive result against Côte d'Ivoire would significantly strengthen the team's chances of progressing from the Zone 3 qualifiers.
