Ogun Sports Council Dissolves Associations as Successful Scrabble Era Ends

The Ogun State Sports Council has dissolved the executives of all sports associations in the state, bringing to a close the tenure of several administrators, including the highly successful Ogun State Scrabble Association led by Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA) President, Adekoyejo Adegbesan.

The dissolution, which took effect from July 31, was contained in a circular signed by the Acting Director of Sports, Oluseyi Sonde.

According to the directive, all sports association executives have been dissolved, except those of the Basketball and Football Associations, whose tenures will continue until the conclusion of their respective national federation elections.

The council commended the outgoing executives for their dedication, sacrifices and contributions to sports development in Ogun State, noting that their achievements would remain part of the state's sporting legacy.

Among the outgoing administrations, the Ogun State Scrabble Association stands out for its remarkable achievements under Adegbesan's leadership.

During his tenure, Ogun emerged as Nigeria's dominant scrabble state, winning the scrabble event at the National Sports Festival, the NSF Inter-Club Championship and the Asaph Zadok National Scrabble Championship to complete a clean sweep of the country's major domestic titles.

The state also boasts Nigeria's top two ranked male scrabble players, while the nation's highest-ranked female player, Bukunmi Afolayan, also represents Ogun.

Ogun's impact has extended beyond the domestic scene, with several of its players contributing to Team Nigeria's success at the World Scrabble Championship, where the country claimed the prestigious Best Country title.

Africa's highest-ranked scrabble player, Oluwatimilehin Doko, as well as World Championship side-event winner Cyril Umebiye, are among the elite players representing the Gateway State.

Reacting to the dissolution, Adegbesan thanked players, officials and members of the outgoing executive for their commitment throughout his administration.

He said their collective efforts enabled Ogun to win every major scrabble title available in Nigeria and maintain its status as the country's leading scrabble state.

Adegbesan also expressed appreciation to members of his executive committee for their support, wishing them success in their future endeavours.

His administration is widely regarded as one of the most successful in the history of Ogun State Scrabble, having transformed the state into a model of excellence through sustained investment in player development, elite competition and administrative leadership.

The achievements recorded during Adegbesan's tenure have established Ogun as a benchmark for scrabble excellence in Nigeria, with the state's successes expected to inspire continued growth and sustained competitiveness in the years ahead.
