Posted : 25 May 2026

The 2025 WTT Contender Lagos concluded in spectacular fashion with Denmark’s Anders Lind successfully defending his men’s singles title, while Japan’s Satsuki Odo emerged as the new women’s singles champion.

Lind delivered another commanding performance at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall in Lagos, defeating South Korea’s Oh Junsung 4-1 in the men’s singles final to become the first player to retain the WTT Lagos title since the tournament was introduced in 2023.

The Danish star controlled the encounter from the opening set, racing to victories of 11-6, 11-9, and 11-5 before Oh responded with a hard-fought 12-10 fourth-set win. Lind, however, regained composure to seal the decisive fifth set 11-8 and successfully defend his crown.

Speaking after the victory, Lind described the achievement as one of the finest moments of his career, while applauding Lagos fans for their energetic support throughout the competition.

According to him, the atmosphere created by the spectators gave him additional motivation during difficult moments, especially after surviving a challenging opening-round match against Romania’s Iulian Chirita.

In the women’s singles category, Odo dethroned defending champion Honoka Hashimoto with an impressive 4-1 triumph in an all-Japanese final.

Odo dominated most parts of the contest, winning with set scores of 11-3, 5-11, 11-3, 11-6, and 11-4 to claim the prestigious title and cap off an outstanding tournament performance.

The doubles events also produced exciting contests as India’s Thakkar Manav and Shah Manush secured the men’s doubles crown after a convincing 3-0 victory in the final.

The Indian pair recorded straight-set wins of 11-7, 12-10, and 11-4 to underline their dominance and expressed delight at emerging champions after consistent displays throughout the tournament.

In the women’s doubles final, Korea Republic duo Reina Aso and Joo Cheonhui defeated Japan’s Hitomi Sato and Shibata Saki 3-1 to lift the title.

The Korean pair impressed with dominant performances, winning the sets 11-1, 11-8, 11-7, and 11-4 to complete a memorable outing in Lagos.

Beyond the action on the tables, stakeholders praised the tournament’s organisation and growing international reputation.

Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, described the WTT Contender Lagos as one of Nigeria’s foremost sports tourism events and commended organisers for sustaining the competition.

Olopade particularly praised Wahid Oshodi and the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation for maintaining global standards, while stressing the need to develop more Nigerian players capable of competing consistently at the highest level alongside African star Quadri Aruna.

He also revealed plans to support youth-focused table tennis initiatives aimed at discovering and nurturing young talents across the country.

Seven-time Olympian Olufunke Oshonaike called for the rebuilding of Nigeria’s women’s table tennis structure, insisting that grassroots development, quality coaching, and proper guidance remain essential for future success.

Former African and Commonwealth champion Atanda Musa equally applauded the standard of organisation, hospitality, and media coverage during the championship, noting that Nigerian players now enjoy greater exposure through regular international tournaments hosted in the country.

Despite some operational challenges, Oshodi expressed satisfaction with the overall success of the tournament and commended fans, officials, and media organisations for contributing to another memorable edition of WTT Contender Lagos.

The elite table tennis showpiece delivered top-tier entertainment and historic milestones to the passionate Lagos crowd. The successful defense by Anders Lind and the emergence of Satsuki Odo highlighted the elite global talent on display at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall. With stakeholders unified in their praise and committed to grassroots development, the tournament solidifies its status as a foundational pillar for sports tourism and future athletic talent in Nigeria.
