The highly anticipated 12th edition of the Golf & Tour Charity Association (GTCAN) tournament concluded this week at the lush Minna Cantonment Golf Club in Niger State, with Oba ASK Makinde claiming the overall title. He posted a gross score of 171 and a net 145 off a handicap of 13 to secure the coveted trophy.
Over 150 golfers from across Nigeria—including military officers, civil servants, traditional rulers, and public officials—converged on Minna for the three-day tournament, held from May 29 to May 31. Beyond the competition, players engaged in charitable outreach to local orphanages and underserved communities, reinforcing the tournament’s philanthropic mission.
Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State praised GTCAN for its integration of sport and charity. Represented at the ceremonial tee-off by Commissioner Yahaya Ibrahim, the governor described the initiative as “a commendable effort aimed at uplifting the less privileged through sports and charity.”
Major General Kevin Aligbe, Commander of TRADOC and Grand Patron of the Minna Cantonment Golf Club, applauded the organizers for choosing Minna as the venue and extended an open invitation for future editions.
Brigadier General Mustapha Onoyiveta (retd.), Chief Coordinator of GTCAN, emphasized that golf serves as more than just a sport—it is a tool for social impact. GTCAN has consistently used the tournament as a platform for visiting orphanages, installing solar energy systems, and organizing medical outreaches nationwide.
Reflecting on his victory, Oba ASK Makinde expressed appreciation to the organizing committee and praised the spirit of sportsmanship that defined the competition. His win exemplifies the enduring blend of athletic excellence and service to humanity that lies at the heart of GTCAN’s values.
As the 12th edition wraps up, the spotlight shifts to the next stops on the GTCAN calendar, promising more impactful charity initiatives and world-class golf events across Nigeria.
