O’Sullivan Begins Quest for Record Eighth World Title as Crucible Draw Sets Stage

Posted : 16 April 2026

Seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan will begin his pursuit of a historic eighth World Snooker Championship title with a first-round clash against China’s debutant He Guoqiang at the iconic Crucible Theatre. The 50-year-old Englishman will start his match on Tuesday, with the contest set to conclude the following day.

The tournament features a mix of established stars and emerging talent, with 16 players advancing from the qualifiers at the English Institute of Sport to join the world’s top-ranked competitors. He Guoqiang secured his place at the Crucible for the first time after defeating England’s Jack Lisowski, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Reigning champion Zhao Xintong, who made history as the first Chinese winner of the title in 2025, will begin his defence against Liam Highfield. Meanwhile, world number one Judd Trump is set to face Gary Wilson, while Masters champion Kyren Wilson takes on teenage debutant Stan Moody.

Elsewhere in the draw, four-time champions John Higgins and Mark Selby face Ali Carter and Jak Jones respectively, while experienced contenders like Mark Williams and Neil Robertson also begin their campaigns against challenging opponents.

This year’s tournament features a record 11 Chinese players in the main draw, underlining the nation’s growing influence in the sport. Notably, there will be two all-Chinese first-round matches, highlighting the depth of talent emerging from the region.

O’Sullivan, who shares the modern-era record of seven world titles with Stephen Hendry, first lifted the trophy in 2001. He now aims to stand alone in history with an eighth crown at a venue that has hosted the championship annually since 1977.

The 17-day event gets underway on Saturday, with the final scheduled to begin on May 3 and conclude the following day. The Crucible Theatre is set to remain the home of the tournament until at least 2045, with planned redevelopment expected to increase its seating capacity and enhance the fan experience.
