Nyong's Late Surge Secures Silver as Team Nigeria's Medal Haul Grows

Ruth Asuquo Nyong produced a superb clean and jerk performance to clinch a silver medal for Team Nigeria in the women's 48kg weightlifting event at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The Nigerian lifter finished with a total of 168kg, comprising 75kg in the snatch and 93kg in the clean and jerk, to edge Malaysia's Irene Jane Henry by a single kilogram in a dramatic battle for second place.

Nyong had ended the snatch segment in third position after lifting 75kg, trailing India's Mirabai Chanu Saikhom (85kg) and Henry (77kg), leaving her with plenty to do in the final phase of the competition.

She responded in impressive fashion during the clean and jerk, successfully lifting 93kg to leapfrog the Malaysian and secure a deserved silver medal for Nigeria.

India's Mirabai Chanu Saikhom dominated the event to win the gold medal with a Commonwealth Games record total of 190kg, while Henry settled for bronze with 167kg.

The medal further boosted Team Nigeria's impressive campaign in Glasgow, taking the country's tally to three gold and four silver medals as athletes continued to compete across various events.

Elsewhere, Nigeria's men's 3x3 basketball team fell 21-16 to hosts Scotland in their fourth Group match. The defeat left the team with a 1-3 record, with their lone victory coming against Cape Verde in the tournament opener.

With several medal events still to come, Team Nigeria will be aiming to build on its encouraging performances and further improve its standing on the Commonwealth Games medal table.
