Team Nigeria made a strong start at the 11th World Para Powerlifting Championships as Esther Nworgu won silver and Rukayat Opeyemi Ajiboye secured bronze.
Team Nigeria began their campaign at the 11th World Para Powerlifting Championships in spectacular fashion, with Esther Nworgu claiming a silver medal in the 50kg category.
Rukayat Opeyemi Ajiboye added to Nigeria’s medal haul, winning a bronze medal in the same weight class on Saturday afternoon.
The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, congratulated both athletes on their outstanding performances, praising their unwavering determination and patriotic spirit.
The Nigerian duo displayed immense strength and resilience in the 50kg class, narrowly missing out on the gold medal.
The ongoing championship, which runs from October 9–18, 2025, marks a historic milestone as the first-ever World Para Powerlifting Championship to be hosted on African soil.
“Our athletes continue to make us proud, showing the world that Nigeria is a force to be reckoned with in para powerlifting,” said Olopade.
“Their bright start in Cairo reflects the depth of talent, discipline, and dedication that define Nigerian sports. The NSC remains committed to providing the necessary support to ensure our champions keep soaring.”
The National Sports Commission reaffirmed its full support for Team Nigeria as the athletes aim for more podium finishes and continue to make the nation proud in Cairo.
