NWFL Election: Contestant Promises Greater Grassroots Development of Wrestling

Posted : 30 September 2025

Nigeria’s women’s national wrestling team coach, Purity Akuh, has pledged full commitment to the development and growth of wrestling in the South West and beyond after emerging victorious in the recently concluded zonal election in the region.

Akuh secured all six votes from the six South West states, reaffirming his dedication to grassroots and elite-level wrestling development.

The UWW Educator emphasized that sports, when fully supported, serve as a powerful tool for reducing crime and unemployment. He also highlighted the role of sports in generating foreign exchange globally, stressing his determination to drive meaningful change in wrestling.

“This and many other issues affecting sports, particularly wrestling, will be addressed with sincerity of purpose,” he said.

Akuh expressed gratitude to Daniel Igali, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation and his former national team coach, as well as Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the Commissioner for Sports Development for their support.

He assured stakeholders that his experience as a wrestler, coupled with technical training as a certified UWW Educator, would provide valuable technical input to the NWF board.

“I’m not joining the board to make up numbers but to contribute with the knowledge and experience I’ve gathered as a wrestler, coach, and international professional,” Akuh stated.

The Ondo State-born coach further promised to work with stakeholders to tackle challenges facing wrestling in the South West while initiating grassroots programs to discover and nurture young talents.

“I have envisioned a sustainable development plan that focuses on grassroots programs and training, with the zeal and dedication to reach raw talents across our villages, with the support of stakeholders,” he concluded.
