NWF intensifies talent development as young wrestlers head to Central African Championships

Posted : 08 June 2026

The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) has reinforced its commitment to grassroots development and international exposure with the participation of three promising wrestlers at the Central African Wrestling Championships in Brazzaville, Congo.

The Nigerian contingent arrived in the Congolese capital on Sunday ahead of the championship, which features competitions in the Senior and U-17 categories across Freestyle, Greco-Roman, and Women's Wrestling events.

Representing Nigeria are Andrew Woyinkorikiye (53kg Women's Wrestling), Precillia Archbone (45kg Women's Wrestling), and Terry Godfrey (65kg Freestyle). They are accompanied by coach Kingkuro Oyinbrakemi Tangi and the Assistant Secretary of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Abigail Ibrahim.

The championship, which gets underway on Monday, is designed to promote wrestling development across the region while encouraging cultural exchange, talent discovery, and stronger sporting ties among participating nations.

Nigeria's participation underscores the federation's strategic focus on exposing young wrestlers to high-level competitions as part of efforts to sharpen their technical abilities, improve their tactical awareness, and prepare them for future continental and global assignments.

Under the leadership of President Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, the federation has continued to prioritize athlete development through increased participation in international tournaments, training programmes, and capacity-building initiatives for coaches and officials.

The latest outing comes shortly after the federation sponsored four Nigerian wrestlers to the United World Wrestling (UWW) Ranking Series event in Mongolia, where Team Nigeria returned with an impressive haul of one silver and two bronze medals.

Since assuming office, Adeniyi, who is also the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, has maintained a clear vision of building on the achievements of previous administrations while creating more opportunities for wrestlers to compete and excel on the international stage.

The Central African Wrestling Championships present another valuable platform for Nigeria's emerging talents to gain experience and showcase their abilities against some of the continent's best wrestlers.

Through consistent participation in these regional tournaments, the federation successfully lays a solid foundation for sustainable sporting success. By testing their skills against top-tier opponents, these young athletes acquire the essential experience needed to elevate Nigeria's status in global wrestling. This strategic exposure ensures that the country continues to discover and nurture elite talents capable of winning laurels on the world stage.
