Former African Champion and current NSF Green Jacket holder, Enoch Nwali, raced into the lead on the opening day of the third edition of "Scrabble In The Jungle" with 8 wins from 13 games.
The wordsmith, who came second at the African Scrabble Championship in Kigali, along with George Ezinore and Tega Okeimute, are closing in on Nwali.
Meanwhile, Grand Master John Aiyedun is finding life in the Jungle quite challenging.
Nwali began the day with a one-point margin win over Tega Okeimute, 472-471, while Ezinore had a more decisive victory over John Aiyedun, 552-414.
Aiyedun’s struggles continued into the third game, while the others marked 2-1 results on the table.
After round eight, both Ezinore and Nwali maintained an identical score of 5-3, while Okeimute had 4-4. Aiyedun slipped further down the pecking order with just two wins.
Nwali, the only player in the last three years to have won four major competitions—Emmanuel Egbele Annual Scrabble Tournament (EEAST), Lekki Scrabble Classics, Douye Diri National Championship, and the NSF Asaph Azadok National Championship—built on his lead in Round 10 after finding the right word combination to lead with a 7-3 score. Ezinore had 6-4, Okeimute was 4-6, and Aiyedun had 3-7.
Nwali secured another win, 390-379, against Ezinore, while Aiyedun fell 387-427 to Okeimute.
John Aiyedun picked up a valuable win over Enoch Nwali in Game 12.
Ezinore and Okeimute completed day one with 7 wins and 6 defeats each, while Aiyedun’s unimpressive run came to a close with 4 wins and 9 defeats.
The tournament, a product of Scrabble Las Vegas, is aimed at testing the endurance limits of contestants and is enjoying good ratings from stakeholders of the mind game.
Over 100 bingos were played on Day 1. Day 2 and the final round resume today (Saturday) with 10 rounds of games.
