NVBF President, Nimrod says Nigerian Volleyball talent making global impact

Posted : 28 May 2026

President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), Musa Nimrod, has highlighted the increasing number of Nigerian volleyball players thriving professionally abroad, describing it as evidence of the sport’s steady growth in the country.

Speaking in Abuja, Nimrod revealed that more than 40 Nigerian volleyball players are currently plying their trade outside the country.

According to him, the achievement reflects the federation’s commitment to creating better opportunities for athletes through structured grassroots development and improved administration.

“I recently requested for the list of our foreign-based players and, to my surprise, we have more than 40 players competing outside Nigeria,” Nimrod said.

He noted that the federation’s long-term investment in grassroots programmes, school sports, and talent discovery initiatives had continued to produce positive results.

The NVBF president recalled that the federation organised a female volleyball development camp three years ago, where over 100 young girls were identified and trained to strengthen the future of the sport.

Nimrod also pointed to the success of France-based Nigerian player Vincent Mathias, who recently won the league title with Montpellier Volleyball Club after rising through Nigeria’s grassroots volleyball system.

He added that volleyball academies now exist across nearly all states of the federation, helping to nurture young talents at an early stage.

The federation’s partnership with the National School Sports Federation, he said, has equally played a key role in expanding participation among young athletes nationwide.

Nimrod reaffirmed the federation’s dedication to volleyball development through regular competitions, equipment support, and talent discovery programmes.

He further called on journalists, stakeholders, and supporters to continue promoting the achievements of Nigerian volleyball while urging fans to follow the ongoing 2026 NVBF Phase One Division One and Division Two National League at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

The competition, which began on May 23, will run until June 5.

The rising export of Nigerian volleyball talent underscores the immense potential within the country's domestic system when supported by structured development. By sustaining these foundational efforts and expanding international pathways, the federation ensures a bright future for the sport on the global stage.
