President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), Engineer Musa Nimrod, has praised the media for its consistent support of volleyball in Nigeria following the men's national team's qualification for the 2026 African Nations Cup.
Nigeria secured its place at the continental championship after defeating Benin Republic 3-1 in its fourth match at the ongoing Zone 3 Qualifiers in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.
The victory confirmed Nigeria's qualification for the African Nations Cup, which will be held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, from September 7 to September 21, 2026.
Speaking after the qualification was confirmed, Nimrod commended journalists for their sustained coverage, describing the media as an important partner in the development of volleyball in the country.
"On behalf of the Board of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, I sincerely appreciate your unwavering support and quality coverage of our activities. Your efforts have helped project volleyball positively across the country," he said.
The NVBF president revealed that attention would now shift to the national Under-19 boys' team, which is preparing for the African Championship in Egypt.
"Preparations are ongoing, and we ask for your continued support and prayers. We are confident the remaining challenges will be resolved," he added.
Nimrod also expressed satisfaction with the steady progress recorded by the sport, noting that both the men's and women's national teams had qualified for their respective continental championships.
"We are pleased with the steady growth of volleyball. The qualification of our men's team for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and our women's team for Kenya shows that we are moving in the right direction. We appreciate your continued support in helping the game grow," he said.
On the court, Nigeria recovered from losing the opening set 25-21 to defeat Benin Republic 3-1, winning the next three sets 25-21, 25-15 and 25-20.
The match, which featured some controversial officiating, was briefly interrupted after Nigeria's head coach received a yellow card for protesting a decision by the officials.
Despite the setback, the Nigerian team maintained its composure to record a fourth consecutive victory, having previously defeated Niger Republic (3-1), hosts Côte d'Ivoire (3-0) and Togo (3-1).
The result also handed Benin Republic its first defeat of the qualifying tournament, while Nigeria and Ghana secured the two available qualification spots from Zone 3 for the African Nations Cup finals.
Nigeria will conclude its qualification campaign against Burkina Faso.
