The National Sports Commission (NSC) has placed renewed emphasis on accountability, grassroots development, and measurable performance following the inauguration of four national sports federation boards in Abuja.
The boards of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Nigeria Arm Wrestling Federation, Nigeria Padel Federation, and Nigeria Fencing Federation were inaugurated on Thursday, with their members urged to prioritise the growth of their respective sports.
Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, described the appointments as a call to service, urging the new board members to demonstrate diligence and put the interests of athletes and Nigerian sports first.
“These appointments come with a responsibility to serve diligently, uphold the highest standards of accountability and put the interests of our athletes and Nigerian sports first,” Olopade said.
He challenged the boards to work collaboratively, establish clear priorities, and deliver measurable progress in their respective disciplines.
According to him, effective administration is essential to identifying emerging talents, strengthening competitive structures, and improving Nigeria’s performance at international competitions.
The newly inaugurated leadership teams are expected to strengthen grassroots participation, improve athlete development, and create better opportunities for Nigerian athletes to excel.
At the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Mustapha Abdullahi was inaugurated as president, with Rita Mosindi serving as secretary-general.
Engr. Samuel Olatunji Jackson assumed leadership of the Nigeria Arm Wrestling Federation, with Dorathy Okpo Benard as secretary-general.
Jimi Benson was inaugurated as president of the Nigeria Padel Federation, while Israel Inwang was named secretary-general.
At the Nigeria Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel emerged as president, with Javan Bernard serving as secretary-general.
The four sports offer opportunities for broader participation and increased international representation, placing significant responsibilities on their respective administrators.
The NSC expects the new boards to build on existing achievements, strengthen their institutional structures, and establish sustainable development programmes capable of producing athletes who can compete successfully at regional, continental, and global levels.
